Celebrations continue for America’s 250th birthday

July Fourth may be over, but America continues celebrating its 250th anniversary.

The Great American State Fair on the National Mall wraps up on July 10 with the theme “The Next 250: Innovation.” The Smithsonian Folklife Festival’s marketplace, which brings together artists and makers from diverse backgrounds, remains open through July 12.

At the National Museum of American History, “In Pursuit of Life, Liberty, and Happiness” showcases 250 objects spanning from the 1700s to today. At the National Gallery of Art, “Dear America” explores how artists have reflected on the American experience over the past 250 years.

Martin Scorsese, Cynthia Erivo to headline National Book Festival in DC

The National Book Festival is Saturday at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Northwest D.C. It will, of course, feature dozens of authors discussing their work, as regular attendees have come to expect. But this year, there’s more than just books and authors being celebrated. “We want people to understand the magic and the vastness of the collections at the Library of Congress,” Clay Smith, literary director of the Library of Congress told WTOP. His team puts the festival together each year. The festival is aiming to give attendees a broader look at American culture beyond books and the written word, Smith said.
