Water main break on Calvert Street

WASHINGTON — DC Water crews are on the scene of a water main break in the 2500 block of Calvert Street in Northwest. Crews had trouble finding the valve to shut off the 12-inch water line because of the snow and not being able to locate a fire hydrant, Will Tickering, spokesman for DC Water. They were finally able to locate the valve and shut off the water at 10:40 a.m. The break occurred around midnight. Initially, DC Water said it would take six to eight hours to repair, but now the agency says it should be an easy fix and gave no time frame for the repairs. It is not known how many customers are affected. Part of the street looks like a virtual river. Here is what it looked like at 5:25 a.m.:

WTOP rides shotgun at 140 mph on DC’s Freedom 250 Grand Prix course

Less than 24 hours before the first checkered flag waves at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in D.C., drivers got a chance Friday to put the 1.7-mile street course through its paces. WTOP got to ride shotgun in a 670-horsepower Chevrolet Corvette Z06, reaching about 140 mph on the streets surrounding the National Mall. Behind the wheel was Ken Morris, General Motors' senior vice president of product programs, product safety and motor sports. “Oh, inspiring!” Morris said after the run. “D.C. is such a phenomenal place. I'm starstruck by it every time I'm here and to be able to have a track in the middle of it is fantastic.”
