Downed wires close stretch of Columbia Pike in Arlington

WASHINGTON — Heads up drivers – give yourself some extra time if you usually take Columbia Pike in Arlington during your travels. The roadway is closed in both directions between South Greenbrier Street and South Dinwiddie Street, and it could remain closed all day. A tree brought down some live wires. Crews are working to clear the area but the road could be closed for several hours. There are no reports of outages in that area. Metrobus routes are being detoured, including 16A, 16B, 16E, 16G, 16H, 16J, 16K, 16P, and 16X.

How a Fairfax Co. nonprofit is anonymously helping students in need across the country

Ron Fitzsimmons was substitute teaching at Mount Vernon High School in Fairfax County, Virginia, when he noticed a girl crying in a corner. He asked what was wrong, and someone told him she couldn’t afford a prom ticket. So Fitzsimmons bought her one, and then asked other teachers whether they bought things for their students. They laughed and shared that they did. Fitzsimmons then approached local charities and asked if they paid for smaller things he felt were important to a child’s self-esteem. They all said no, and one said they didn’t even have a petty cash drawer.
