WASHINGTON — How will you celebrate America’s birthday?

Many people enjoy the laid-back fun of a neighborhood parade, while others crowd into downtown D.C. year after year to see one of the best fireworks shows in the nation.

Whether you prefer your Independence Day celebrations large or small, you’re sure to find one you like on our comprehensive regional list.

All events are free and scheduled to take place on July 4, unless otherwise noted. Most are also weather-dependent.

MARYLAND

VIRGINIA

  • Arlington County
    • Long Bridge Park in Arlington will be open to those who want to view the National Mall fireworks, but there will be no special activities as in years past.
  • Charlottesville
    • Patriotism in the Park in Charlottesville includes live music, kids activities, a chicken fingers-eating contest, and fireworks.
  • Prince William County
    • The Potomac Nationals will have a pregame buffet and postgame fireworks. Buffet tickets are a $10 add-on to a ticket in any seating section, and kids 5 and younger are free with an adult ticket.

DELAWARE

Va. health dept. improves nursing home inspection backlog, reforms sanction criteria for facilities

Stories of neglect in care or unsanitary living situations have plagued several of Virginia’s nursing home facilities in recent years and data backs up a lapse in oversight by state agencies.  With reform efforts underway, the Virginia Department of Health officials said they aim to adopt sanction criteria by the end of the year to rein in bad actors and get troubled facilities back on track.  As of July, 58% of Virginia’s nursing homes were overdue for inspections and 68 of Virginia’s 289 nursing homes were found to have serious deficiencies, according to ProPublica. Several of the state’s flagged facilities with numerous deficiencies also had high staffing turnover rates.  The issue has been salient among various healthcare spaces, including VDH.
