Montgomery County schools facing a $3 billion maintenance backlog, officials say

About 100 hours before students return to the classroom, Montgomery County Public Schools leaders issued a warning about what kind of buildings they’ll be walking into.

The county school system, they said, is operating with an estimated $3 billion deferred maintenance backlog.

“And growing every day,” said Andrea Swiatocha, MCPS’ deputy chief of facilities management.

For students and teachers of Maryland’s largest school system, that can mean moldy ceilings, cracked surfaces in parking lots and HVAC systems that can’t be counted on to keep them cool.

College Park Boys & Girls Club reopens after near 7-year hiatus

Thanks to the efforts of a College Park, Maryland, mother and resident, the long-shuttered Boys & Girls Club will open again this fall with a youth soccer league. Since 2019, kids who live in College Park had to go to neighboring communities to participate in such programs. "All the neighboring towns have their Boys & Girls Clubs, and we're an even bigger town, and ours isn't active," said Angela Gentile. She's actively recruiting volunteers to get the club moving again.
