Georgetown head basketball coach Patrick Ewing tests positive for COVID-19

The head coach of the Georgetown University men’s basketball team has tested positive for COVID-19, the university said Friday.

Patrick Ewing said that he had chosen to make his diagnosis public to show that the disease can affect anyone.

“This virus is serious and should not be taken lightly,” Ewing said in a statement released by the university. “I want to encourage everyone to stay safe and take care of yourselves and your loved ones. Now more than ever, I want to thank the healthcare workers and everyone on the front lines. I’ll be fine and we will all get through this.”

Ewing is being treated at a local hospital. He is the only member of the Georgetown’s basketball program to test positive for the disease, according to the university.

He has been head coach of Georgetown’s men’s basketball program since April 2017.

DC-area volunteers raising money for truck to support Ukraine war effort

Some D.C.-area residents are trying to raise enough money to send a specially equipped truck to Ukraine as part of a nationwide grassroots fundraising campaign. Bethesda, Maryland, resident Jeffrey Bloch is helping lead Maryland's effort through the 50 States for Ukraine campaign. The group is trying to raise $13,000 for a vehicle for use by a Ukrainian military unit. Funds raised through 50 States for Ukraine are used by the organization Car for Ukraine to purchase, modify and deliver vehicles. According to the fundraising website, efforts in neighboring D.C. and Virginia have already raised enough money to fund multiple vehicles. “These are not really the large military vehicles or tanks, things like that, that are normally associated with government aid packages, but they are a bit smaller vehicles that are not covered under these aid packages, but they're very urgently needed on the ground," Bloch said.
