Car Review: Audi expands SUV offerings with new flagship Q8

9 OF 9

If you are searching for a more luxurious SUV, the new sporty Audi Q8 could be a good fit. Audi has filled this new Q8 with a plush interior and loads of technology and high-tech gear.

The new ride elevates the driving experience with better-than-expected handling. The Quattro AWD turns it into a sure-footed machine in all conditions. While athletic when needed, the ride is smooth and quiet on the highway.

The turbo V6 motivates the five-seat SUV smartly when mashing the pedal. The eight-speed Tiptronic transmission provides very quick shifts that are remarkably smooth.

The Q8 is the flagship for the Audi SUV/crossover line, and the interior really stands out when you choose the top prestige package and add a few more options. My Q8 came with leather everywhere.

Power seats with heat/ventilation and massage make for a very comfortable long distance cruiser. The rest of the interior was a delight with high-end finishes throughout the cabin. The Q8 only has seating for five, so if you need more space, consider the Q7.

The Audi is stuffed with the latest tech, and the interior is awash with touch screens. Even the virtual cockpit is all digital with great graphics but isn’t easy to use at first.

Cost: $68,200; as tested $89,940

MPG: 17mpg city, 22mpg highway; I managed 21.5mpg in 722 miles of driving.

Safety: Audi pre-sense basic, Audi pre-sense front, top view camera system, Audi side assist, Audi pre-sense rear, Audi adaptive cruise assist/traffic assist, Audi active lane assist with emergency assist, turn assist, intersection assistant

Options: $9,150 Prestige package; $5,950 Luxury package; $2,750 Adaptive Chassis package; $2,250 Year One package; $650 Towing package; $600 Cold Weather package
Things to know: A new top-of-the-line SUV from Audi, the Q8 combines style, luxury and technology wrapped in a sporty-looking body.

Pros:

  • Smooth and comfortable ride
  • Packed with technology and safety equipment
  • Top notch interior especially with pricey Prestige and Luxury package

Cons:

  • Only has seating for five
  • Learning curve to use all of the latest technology
  • Sporty looking exterior limits cargo capacity

Car Review: Land Rover Defender OCTA is a sinister supercar

If you're running a covert war or a Russian crime syndicate, boy do I have the ride for you. I present the Land Rover Defender 110 OCTA Black. And black it is. The paint, the wheels and the leather seats are all black, among other things. Even the Land Rover grille emblem is blacked out. Team of goons not included. The menacing look is backed up by what's under the hood: a 4.4‑liter twin turbo mild‑hybrid V8 producing 626 horsepower, which growls at idle and roars under acceleration. It's enough to rocket this behemoth to 60 miles per hour in a scant 3.8 seconds.
