Elevator box damage closes Washington Monument through weekend

WASHINGTON — The Washington Monument will be closed through the weekend after its elevator control box was damaged.

A contractor working on the monument damaged the elevator control box while working on an unrelated issue, the National Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst announced Friday evening.

The monument will be closed until early next week, Litterst says.

There was no one in the elevator when it broke down Friday evening.

The specific reopening date will be determined as the work progresses this weekend.
