Demonstrations sparked by the death of Minneapolis man George Floyd while in police custody spread throughout the U.S. on Friday. In the District, a march that began in the historically black Shaw neighborhood near 14th and U Street NW made its way south to Lafayette Park across the street from the White House, prompting a short-term lockdown.
While outside, protesters knocked over barriers and scuffled with police and Secret Service agents before moving east to the Capitol Building.
By 9:30 p.m., the march continued east into the residential neighborhood of Independence Ave. SE close to Eastern Market.
As they walked, protesters chanted “No justice, no peace,” “Hands up, don’t shoot” and “Black Lives Matter.”
