WASHINGTON — A 12-year-old western lowland gorilla now calls the Smithsonian National Zoo “home.”

Calaya came to the zoo from the Woodland Park Zoo on Feb. 25, and is now on exhibit following a standard quarantine period, according to a news release.

This week, keepers at the National Zoo began introducing Calaya to 22-year-old male silverback Baraka, as well as 32-year-old Mandara and 6-year-old Kibibi, both females. Keepers say Calaya is “confident and socially-savvy.”

The western lowland gorilla is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as critically endangered.

Visitors to the National Zoo can see Calaya at the Great Ape House.
