2 women, firefighter injured in apartment fire in NE DC

WASHINGTON — Two women are in the hospital after fire in an apartment in Northeast D.C.

D.C. Fire said the fire started around 9 p.m. in an apartment building in the 1400 block of Downing Street, NE. Firefighters contained the flames to the one unit.

One woman was rescued from the first floor apartment. Fire officials said she was transported with critical, life threatening injuries.

A second woman was taken to the hospital for evaluation. A firefighter was also injured and transported although D.C. Fire said firefighter’s injuries were not serious.

Firefighters also rescued a dog from the apartment above the fire.

Investigators are still trying to determine what started the fire.
