Man arrested, charged for suspected hate crime attack in Columbia Heights

WASHINGTON — A D.C. man was arrested for an attack in Columbia Heights that police believe was motivated by hate or bias.

It happened Wednesday around 9 p.m. in the 3000 block of 14th Street Northwest. Police say that 48-year-old Charles Sharp, of D.C., struck the victim multiple times with an expandable baton and made derogatory statements.

The victim, from Oxon Hill, Maryland, had injuries that were not life-threatening and was treated at a hospital.

Police arrested Sharp Thursday and charged him with assault with a dangerous weapon.
