1 dead after driver fleeing traffic stop crashes in Prince George’s Co.

A driver attempting to escape a traffic stop crashed into another vehicle, killing the other driver, in Largo, Maryland, Wednesday morning.

The Prince George’s County police said in a series of tweets that the crash happened around 6:30 a.m. at Pookey Way and White House Road, and that they detained the driver who caused the crash.

Police Chief Malik Aziz said police tried to stop two vehicles for traffic violations. They both drove off; one driver crossed the road’s double yellow lines and collided with another car head-on, Aziz said.

Police said the other driver died of his injuries at a hospital at about 9:30 a.m.

The officer involved in the chase is on administrative suspension, Aziz said.

Maryland State Police are investigating the crash, and the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division is conducting the investigation on the officer, a spokesperson said.

Investigators will release the names of the officer and the driver who was killed within two days, and the officer’s body camera footage within two weeks, the spokesperson said.
