Lawrence Chester Stinnett, former sheriff of Calvert County, dies at 79

WASHINGTON — Lawrence Chester Stinnett, who served as Calvert County Sheriff between 1990 and 1994, died on Jan. 5 at his home in Broomes Island, Maryland. He was 79.

Stinnett was born Dec. 4, 1938, in Prince Frederick, Maryland. He served as a Maryland State Trooper for 24 years before being elected Sheriff of Calvert County in 1990. After serving as sheriff, Stinnett went on to work as a process server for 20 years and also worked at the A&P Grocery store.

Stinnett is remembered as being a jokester and a very hard worker. He loved horse racing, watching baseball and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by a daughter and grandchildren.

14 Maryland high school students named at semifinalists for US Presidential Scholars program

More than a dozen Maryland high school students have a reason to celebrate — they were named semifinalists for the U.S. Presidential Scholars program. Fourteen students have been named semifinalists, including 13 from public schools and one from a private school.
