The Montgomery County Planning Department will present preliminary recommendations this week for the Veirs Mill corridor master plan, with the goal of transforming the congested, accident-prone area into a safe, transit-friendly community with additional mixed-use development and higher density residential buildings in select areas.
The recommendations, to be presented Thursday to the county planning board, are aligned with the county’s recently adopted Vision Zero traffic safety plan designed to significantly reduce fatal and severe collisions. They are also designed to enhance the community with developments that encourage a walkable lifestyle.
They come at a time when the Veirs Mill corridor, which spans about four miles from the Wheaton central business district to the city of Rockville, has been beset by numerous deaths, two in the past 18 months, caused by collisions, said Jessica McVary, the county’s lead planner for the master plan.
