DC police arrest 1 in shooting that injured 1-year-old; 2 more sought

WASHINGTON — D.C. police have arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting last week that injured a 1-year-old boy sitting in his stroller, but are still seeking two additional suspects, including one who has not yet been identified by authorities. D.C. police arrested 39-year-old Derrick Damon Watson of Northeast D.C. early Tuesday morning, Police Chief Peter Newsham announced at a Tuesday news conference. Watson has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm. Authorities are also seeking 27-year-old Saheed Aluwatoyin Washington Sulu of Southeast. Police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to Sulu’s arrest.

Newsham said police also need the public’s help identifying a third man suspected in the July 10 shooting in the 1300 block of I Street NE in which 13-month-old Jeremiah White was shot. The man being sought is seen below in the video released by police.

Police said the three men were arguing before shots were fired near the Northeast courtyard. Newsham did not say if police had determined which firearm’s bullets struck the boy. “We had grown men … in a courtyard in our community where people were trying to enjoy the peaceful quiet of a summer evening, and they resorted to firearms,” Newsham said. “So each of them, in my opinion, is equally responsible for the fact that that little boy got injured as seriously as he did.” The boy was sitting in his stroller at the time, and his mother told NBC Washington that her son was shot twice. The boy’s injuries were not life-threatening and he is now recovering at home, police said. Anyone with information about the case should call police at 202-727-9099 or text a message to 50411.
