Inauguration Day preparations begin despite uncertainty

WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans are yet to choose their next president, but preparations have already begun for Inauguration Day.

The Washington Post reports a chain-link fence was erected last week outside the White House. It’s one of the first signs that construction is beginning on the reviewing stand for the inaugural parade, a ritual that goes back to America’s earliest days.

The fenced perimeter includes parts of Pennsylvania Avenue and Lafayette Square.

“Doesn’t look like much,” someone connected with the work said on Twitter, “but we’re making good progress.”

Work has been underway even longer at the Capitol where workers are constructing the platform on which the new president will be sworn in. The next president will take office on Jan. 20.
