Thousands celebrate Easter sunrise at the Lincoln Memorial

WASHINGTON — Thousands of people from across the region and the nation gathered at the Lincoln Memorial to take part in a unique Easter Sunrise Service Sunday.

“We’re getting our praise on,” Denise Patterson said. “He has risen!”

The service offers Christians the unique opportunity to celebrate Easter Sunday watching the sun rise over the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol dome in the background.

“This is amazing to watch all of these Christians gathered for one special purpose today,” James Payne told WTOP.  “It’s pretty awesome.”

People came from various parts of the U.S. to attend the service.

“I come out here every year,” said Crystal Trujillo, who traveled from New Mexico.  “It’s a beautiful view.”

Attendee Cindy Libby-Green said the thing that makes this event different from others is the location.

“This is the heart of our country right here,” she said.
