Special ed guide helps military families in Va.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia officials have developed a new guide to help military families with children in special education.

The Virginia Department of Education says the 16-page guide provides information about special education programs in Virginia public schools. Virginia educates more military children than almost any other state.

Topics in the guide include enrollment, services, parental consent, dispute resolution and procedural safeguards.

Printed copies of the guide were sent to school division special education directors and to Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine school liaison officers and military family coordinators. Copies also are being provided to members of the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children.

Guidance for Military Families with Students in Special Education is also available online.

Grammy-winner Ledisi brings Dinah Washington, her own music and a reverence for history to Strathmore

Ledisi has spent much of her career looking backward without ever losing sight of where she is going. That will be particularly evident when the Grammy-winning singer brings her music — and her reverence for the artists who helped shape it — to Strathmore in North Bethesda, Maryland, for two shows this Friday and Saturday. Audiences can expect the storytelling and vocal power that have defined Ledisi’s concerts, but with a significant addition: the music of Dinah Washington, the legendary singer she honors on her recent tribute album, “For Dinah.” “What you will hear is a spiritual experience inside of the blues, inside of my music, inside of the relationship between my influence with ‘For Dinah,’” Ledisi said in an interview with WTOP.
