WASHINGTON (AP) — District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray is set to release a long-term plan to improve the city’s transportation network.
The plan, to be released Tuesday, comes after 18 months of study, and Gray won’t be in office to implement much of it. He lost in the April Democratic primary. A new mayor will take over in January.
A draft version of the plan said the District should work to increase the number of trips made by transit, bicycling and walking, while leaving room for the same number of cars that use city streets today.
The District is projected to gain 170,000 residents and 200,000 workers by 2040. The draft plan says the District would need to spend $54 billion on transportation by 2040 in today’s dollars to accommodate that growth.
