DC road closures, parking restrictions in effect for Freedom 250 Grand Prix

If you’re planning on driving in the D.C. area, you may run into some street closures and parking restrictions for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix.

During the Freedom 250 Grand Prix setup and breakdown, parking lanes, curb lanes and partial travel lanes will be closed along city streets. The roadways will remain open, but there will be reduced travel lanes and limited parking.

Several roads will be closed for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, which will be held Aug. 22 and 23, as cars race around D.C. to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence.

For drivers looking to get into parking garages in restricted areas, check out this overview from D.C. police on what access points will be open. According to the police department, officers will try to let vehicles drive to parking garages and loading docks when it is safe to do so. Drivers who reach a closure point will be asked to give officers a “brief explanation of their destination.”

The most extensive closures begin Aug. 21 at 3 a.m. and continue through Aug. 23 at 11:59 p.m. Another round of closures and restrictions will happen after the event, from Aug. 24, through Sept. 3.

Portions of GW Parkway closed for filming

On Thursday, Aug. 20, the National Park Service will close portions of George Washington Parkway and other surrounding roads for production related to a film being made for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix.

Special filmed segments for each branch of the armed services are being produced for the upcoming race, the agency said. The U.S. Coast Guard portion will be filmed in the area Thursday.

From 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., Anacostia Drive SE from South Capitol Street to Nicholson Street SE and Marion Barry Avenue SE from Aviation Drive SE to Anacostia Drive SE will be closed.

From 10 a.m. to noon, George Washington Parkway will be closed at Arlington Memorial Bridge and Memorial Circle and at the NPS section of Memorial Avenue.

Also from 10 a.m. to noon, the southwest portion of Lincoln Memorial Circle NW and the entrance ramp from Arlington Memorial Bridge to Ohio Dr SW will be closed.

See a map of the road closures on the National Park Service’s website.

Metro and IndyCar team up for a busy weekend of Freedom 250 Grand Prix events

No, you weren't hallucinating Thursday morning — that was an IndyCar being pulled along the Metro tracks through a portion of D.C. It was part of a promotion between the Freedom 250 Grand Prix and the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority to remind people that the best way to navigate the expected huge crowds this weekend is to take Metro. "Even IndyCar knows the fastest way to get around is actually on Metro," said Randy Clarke, the transit agency's general manager and CEO. "We're really excited about this, and this car was a really kind of fun way to show a different way that people can see the Metro system, and we're having a little fun." The IndyCar, described as a work car that will not run in any of the races scheduled over the weekend, was fastened aboard a flat-bed train car and pulled along the yellow line, beginning at the King Street station up to the Mount Vernon station then back south to the L'Enfant Plaza station. Metro riders gawked at the multicolored, low-profile racecar as the train paused at L'Enfant for a photo op.
