Vehicle plunges into Anacostia River, 1 dead

WASHINGTON — District of Columbia police say one man has died after a car plunged into the Anacostia River.

It wasn’t clear what caused the vehicle to fall into the river on Sunday morning or how many people were inside. It happened near the John Philip Sousa Bridge at Pennsylvania Avenue in southeast Washington.

The man was taken to a hospital, but rescuers were not able to revive him.

Rescue crews from the D.C. fire department and police were on the scene early Sunday.
