Critically injured hiker rescued by helicopter in Frederick

WASHINGTON — A Maryland State Police helicopter crew lifted a critically injured teenager to safety Friday after a fall at Catoctin Mountain National Park in Thurmont.

The teenager suffered traumatic injuries after falling into a crevasse next to Chimney Rock in a remote area of the park, according to police.

Maryland State Police helicopter Trooper 3, based in Frederick, was dispatched Friday afternoon where crew members conducted an aerial extraction of the teen from the rocks due to the severity of the injuries and the remote location where the injuries took place, police said.

Before being lifted out of the park, emergency personnel had hiked more than two miles in rugged terrain to package and stabilize the teen before the helicopter crew could prepare for transportation to Children’s National Medical Center in D.C.

The flight crew was assisted by the National Park Service, Frederick County Fire Department, and the Frederick County Advanced Technical Rescue Team.
