Ecuador: Castillo out for 3 weeks but in WC squad

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Ecuador is taking Segundo Castillo to the World Cup despite the midfielder being ruled out for three weeks with a knee injury.

The 32-year-old Castillo was injured in Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Mexico, but confirmed in the 23-man squad on Monday.

Ecuador coach Reinaldo Rueda says through a translator that “the doctor checked him out yesterday and he confirmed he needs three weeks to recover. But he’ll still be with us. The hope is he will be ready in time.”

Rueda’s side opens its World Cup campaign in Brazil against Switzerland on June 15, plays Honduras on June 20 and completes Group E against France on June 25.

Before then, Ecuador plays England in a friendly on Wednesday at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens.
