Md. Medal of Honor recipient took stage at DNC

WASHINGTON — Among the many speakers who took the stage Thursday, the final night of the Democratic National Convention, was a Bethesda, Maryland, man who received the Medal of Honor.

President Barack Obama honored Capt. Florent “Flo” Groberg for his valor in Afghanistan last November.

Groberg grew up in Bethesda, graduating from Walter Johnson High School, and ran track for the University of Maryland before enlisting in the Army and serving two tours in Afghanistan.

He nearly lost his leg in a 2012 explosion when he threw himself on a suicide bomber to protect his comrades.

Groberg spoke after Gen. John Allen.

Groberg also shared his story of how running helped shape him into a soldier and how he felt about receiving the nation’s highest honor with WTOP.
