CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Former Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon is expected to plead guilty in federal court to a public corruption charge that could send him to prison until 2034.

Cannon is set to appear Tuesday morning before U.S. Magistrate Judge David Cayer. Documents filed in federal court on Monday say Cannon has agreed to enter a guilty plea to a single count of honest services wire fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The 47-year-old Democrat resigned shortly after his arrest in March. According to the federal criminal complaint, Cannon accepted more than $48,000 in cash, airline tickets, hotel rooms and the use of a luxury apartment from undercover FBI agents posing as real estate developers.
