Driver gets 7 years for killing pedestrian in DC

WASHINGTON (AP) — A man who prosecutors say was high on PCP when he drove a van erratically on a southeast Washington roadway and struck and killed a pedestrian has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Fifty-three-year-old Woodrow R. Johnson Jr. of Capitol Heights, Md. was sentenced Friday.

Johnson pleaded guilty in February to voluntary manslaughter. Prosecutors said that on Nov. 8, 2013 he was driving on Benning Road SE when he struck and killed 24-year-old Shamika Smith of Washington. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene. Prosecutors said Johnson also hit five cars.

After he was arrested authorities say Johnson told police he had smoked PCP before driving.

An attorney for Johnson declined comment when reached by telephone Monday.
