Romania: court orders protester hospitalized

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — A court has ordered a man accused of spitting at the Romanian president to be forcibly hospitalized for psychiatric tests.

Adrian Zglobiu was filmed appearing to spit in the face of Traian Basescu on Saturday during the president’s visit to the Black Sea port of Constanta.

The 39-year-old unemployed man was briefly detained after the incident. On Wednesday he ran away from police and cut himself with a knife, refusing to submit to psychiatric tests.

A court in Constanta on Thursday ordered that he be forcibly hospitalized. Zglobiu is being investigated for disturbing public order and causing offense. Basescu says he will personally pursue charges.

Zglobiu said he disliked the president and regretted not emigrating.
