Washington and Lee set to start $13.5m project

LEXINGTON, Va. (AP) — Washington and Lee University is set to start building a Center for Global Learning.

The university’s board of trustees has approved the $13.5 million project. Construction is expected to begin this week.

The university says the facility will connect 8,600 square feet of existing duPont Hall with 17,700 square feet in a new building.

The facility will house classrooms, seminar rooms and instructional labs. It will feature an atrium, garden, courtyard and international tea shop to encourage student and faculty interaction and provide a venue for special events and exhibits.

The facility also will contain several language departments, offices for visiting international scholars and the university’s Office of International Education.

Completion of the final phase of the center will depend on reaching the remaining $1.5 million of a fundraising goal.
