Name of DC’s Arena Football team announced

WASHINGTON — Washington’s newest professional sports franchise has a name. The Arena Football l League team name is the Washington Valor.

The name, logo and colors of the team set to begin play in 2017 at Verizon Center were unveiled Thursday.

The team’s colors will be red, white, blue and silver.

Monumental Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Wizards, Capitals, Mystics and Verizon Center, announced in March it had been awarded an expansion franchise in the AFL.

At the news conference announcing the team’s launch, Gene Simmons of the band Kiss and who owns the LA Kiss in the AFL said, “Come on down and see one of our games. It’s the best time you will have, with your pants on.”

Washington is the ninth team in the AFL. The league began play in 1987. A Washington team played in the league’s inaugural season and was known as the Commandos.
