Key ingredient in cherry pie is in short supply

WASHINGTON — If you are planning to bake a tart cherry pie for the Fourth of July, you may find it tough to find the main ingredient.

Sour cherries are in limited supply. The Washington Post reports the cold snap in March took a toll on the sour cherry crop in many farms across the East Coast.

Fans of sour cherries know they are rarely found at the supermarket, you have to go to a farmers market to find them as they are highly perishable, but it may be worth the effort.

Sour cherries have been labeled a super fruit — with some athletes on college teams taking up drinking sour cherry juice as it is believed to relieve inflammation and pain.

A study of runners who participated in the 198 mile Oregon Hood to Coast Relay race found runners had less pain after drinking sour cherry juice than regular fruit juice.
