RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The National Transportation Safety Board says in a preliminary report on a deadly hot air balloon crash in Virginia that the balloon hit a power line as it attempted to land.

The report was issued Tuesday in the May 9 crash that killed the veteran pilot and two passengers. The report is consistent with eyewitness accounts of the crash.

The crash occurred in Doswell about 25 miles north of Richmond ahead of a hot air balloon festival. The pilot, Daniel T. Kirk, was killed as well as two athletic officials with the University of Richmond.

They were Richmond’s associate head coach for the women’s basketball team, Ginny Doyle, and the director of basketball operations, Natalie Lewis.
