Va. gov to visit Indian site along York River

GLOUCESTER, Va. (AP) — Gov. Terry McAuliffe is heading to a site along the York River that once was the center of Powhatan’s vast Indian empire.

McAuliffe is scheduled to visit Werowocomoco on Tuesday with his secretary of natural resources, Molly Ward.

McAuliffe spokesman Brian Coy says President Barack Obama’s 2015 budget provides funding for the National Park Service to acquire the Gloucester site as part of the John Smith Trail.

The English captain was the adventurous Jamestown settler who explored the Chesapeake Bay. Besides being Powhatan’s seat of power, the Werowocomoco site is also believed to be where Pocahontas appealed to her father Powhatan to save Smith’s life.

The site is under easement with the state, meaning it is protected from development.
