Thomas’ tries to get you to have burgers on English muffins

WASHINGTON — Is it still an American burger if it’s on an English muffin?

For purists, a burger should be served on a bun. Preferably a sesame seed bun. Or brioche.

For the adventurous, burgers can be found served on everything from pretzel rolls to portobello mushrooms, and even buns made out of ramen.

And, English muffins.

But a good burger is a bit bigger than a good English muffin, a problem the king of nooks and crannies thinks it has solved.

In a not-so-subtle marketing pivot, Thomas English muffins has repackaged its sandwich-sized muffins as Grillers XL English muffins — to show their versatility, it says — and is selling them under the Grillers XL name in a few markets, including Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York.

The Thomas English Muffin brand dates back to 1880. The company is now owned by Horsham, Pennsylvania-based Bimbo Bakeries USA.
