Washington Nationals add 1B Greg Dobbs to bench

WASHINGTON (AP) — First baseman Greg Dobbs has joined the Washington Nationals, who optioned catcher Sandy Leon to Triple-A Syracuse.

The Nationals selected Dobbs’ contract before Friday’s game against the Mets. He signed as a minor league free agent Monday.

Dobbs was 1 for 13 this season for the Miami Marlins, who designated him for assignment April 29, then released him May 6.

The lefty-hitting Dobbs has a .262 batting average over 11 seasons with three clubs.

To make room on their 40-man roster, the Nationals put Syracuse outfielder Eury Perez on the 60-day disabled list with a broken left toe.

Leon hit .182 in 13 games with the Nationals this season. They had been carrying three catchers on the roster since starter Wilson Ramos came off the disabled list last week.
