WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal regulators say that Dominion’s proposal to export liquefied natural gas from a terminal in Cove Point, Maryland, would pose “no significant impact” on the environment — a positive step for the company.

The environmental assessment by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission staff is a recommendation to the commission, which will decide whether the project can go forward. Other permits are also required.

The 241-page FERC assessment, issued Thursday, includes several recommended mitigation measures.

The plan by Virginia-based Dominion Resources Inc. to export liquefied natural gas has generated opposition from some environmental groups. They say it will hurt the Chesapeake Bay and help the hydraulic fracturing boom.
