Police: Man set fire during eviction standoff

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) — Fairfax County police say officers stormed a Falls Church home after a man who faced eviction set fire to the house during an 11-hour standoff.

Officer Bud Walker says sheriff’s deputies were serving an eviction notice at the home on Kenney Drive on Wednesday morning, when they noticed something suspicious and called county police. He says police negotiated with the man until the evening, when he started a fire inside.

That’s when Walker says police used tear gas and entered the home. He says the man was taken into custody, no one was injured and firefighters extinguished the fire.

No charges were filed initially and police did not identify the man.
