Ex-Metro contractor pleads guilty to copper thefts

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) — A former contractor for Metro has pleaded guilty to stealing 30,000 pounds of copper wire and cable from Metro facilities and selling it for $88,000.

Sixty-four-year-old James Mulcahey of Charlotte Hall pleaded guilty to one count of theft Friday in Prince George’s County Circuit Court. Sentencing is set for July 31.

Prosecutors say between March and June 2013, Mulcahey sold copper wire to a scrap yard in Charles County, receiving approximately $13,000.

Authorities say police put Mulcahey under surveillance, and watched him make several more transactions at the same scrap yard. He was arrested in November.
