D.C. bridge reopens to commuters

WASHINGTON – A shortcut between Silver Spring and Northwest Washington is back.

The Kalmia Road Bridge reopened Friday. The bridge connects East and West Beach Drives.

The project built a wider bridge and added a separate pedestrian walkway. And the stream bed has been improved to prevent flooding and soil erosion.

The area was damaged by a storm in 2009 and the $2 million project began late last year.

More than 16,000 vehicles use the bridge daily, according to the District Department of Transportation.
