DOVER, Del. (AP) — A report of a suspicious person who appeared to be carrying a weapon at Dover Air Force Base prompted officials to order a temporary lockdown on the Delaware military post Thursday.

The lockdown was ordered as a precaution after the suspicious person was reported around 11 a.m. Base personnel were told to shelter in place until the lockdown was lifted at 2:40 p .m. The base operates one of the largest and busiest air freight terminals in the U.S. military. It also is home to the nation’s largest military mortuary and is the arrival point for the remains of troops who have died overseas.

Base spokeswoman Lt. Remoshay Nelson said there was no report of an active shooter, and no reports of injuries.

Nelson said the lockdown was prompted by a report of a possibly armed person who was running through a parking lot toward a hangar where aircraft are washed. Security forces searched that area.

“They did not find anything to support that claim,” Nelson said. “Based on what was reported, we took the necessary actions to make sure our personnel were safe.”
