WASHINGTON — Fairfax County police are searching for the driver in a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian Thursday night.

Police say that Matthew Calendine, 33, of Burke, was sitting on a curb on Shiplett Boulevard near Capella Avenue when, for unknown reasons, he got up and stumbled into the eastbound lane of Shiplett Boulevard just before 9 p.m.

The police say that one vehicle avoided Calendine, but he was hit by a dark-colored sedan, possibly a Toyota or Honda. They say the car stopped just past Calendine, but then drove off.

Calendine was pronounced dead at the scene. The police say they’re investigating whether alcohol was a factor; they don’t think speed was a factor.
