WASHINGTON — Commuters between Arlington and D.C. will soon have a new option for getting around.

The car-sharing company car2go and officials from the two cities announced on Wednesday that car2go members will be able to start a trip in Arlington and drop off their cars in D.C., and vice versa.

The change takes effect May 26. Previously, car2go rentals had to be returned to the jurisdiction from which they’d been rented.

“Partnering with Washington, D.C. is a logical next step for Arlington’s yearlong demonstration study with car2go,” Arlington County Director of Transportation Dennis Leach said in a statement released by car2go.

“We are proud to partner with our colleagues in Arlington County to make travel easier and more flexible within the D.C. region,” said Leif Dormsjo, director of the District Department of Transportation, in the statement.

“This new development improves quality of life by enabling more people to affordably go where they want, when they want,” said car2go CEO Paul DeLong.

Car2Go says it also waived its $35 membership fee for and will provide them with 15 minutes of free driving time.

It seats up to eight, can be equipped with almost every luxury touch and competes with SUVs costing thousands (or tens of thousands) more.
