Brian K Betts Foundation for Educational Enrichment

The BKB Foundation was established to continue Brian’s legacy of educational enrichment for students and faculty. At the time of his death in 2010, he was the beloved principal of Shaw at Garnet-Patterson in DC. The Foundation supports students in the Metro area by funding scholarships, college connection trips for middle school students whose parents/guardians did not attend college, and grants for educational programs. The Foundation started awarding monies in 2013. Two scholarships were awarded last year and a college connection trip for several DC students to our host college, Duke University. In 2014, we will extend the funding for the 2013 scholarship recipients, and award two new scholarships. In February 2014, we funded our second college trip to Duke for students from Hart Middle School. While we have met with incredible generosity, we are a relatively new foundation whose current budget does not afford us the opportunity to extend our funds to the need we see in the Metro area’s educational programs. With the current economy, there is more of a need for educational foundations such as ours. Through fundraising activities and use of social media, we have been able to accomplish what we have so far. With a monetary award from WTOP, we will be able to reach more students and faculty and continue Brian’s commitment to excellence in education.
