Capital Bikeshare expects to ‘crush’ ridership record

WASHINGTON — Between the beautiful weather and massive number of tourists visiting the cherry blossoms, a record number of people will use the Capital Bikeshare service this weekend.

At 2:30 p.m. Saturday, 1,080 bikes were in use, which is more than one-third of the entire fleet.

“I’ve never seen anything close to that [number] before,” Reggie Sanders, a spokesman with the District Department of Transportation, says in an e-mail.

On Friday, even with the rain at night, there were 11,551 Capital Bikeshare trips throughout the system. That broke the previous single-day record.

Based on the numbers from the first half of Saturday, Sanders says the system will “crush” that new record.
