Transportation leaders to address Montgomery Co. GreenFest

WASHINGTON — Maybe you took part in Take Your Kid to Work Day on Thursday, but a Leave Your Car at Home Day might not be far behind.

“Leave Your Car at Home” is the title of a workshop all about getting around without a car that’s a part of Montgomery County’s GreenFest, and which will feature Montgomery County Director of Transportation Al Roshdieh. Planning Board Director Casey Anderson will also talk about the county’s growing transportation options, including biking.

While GreenFest will feature workshops and discussions on sustainability, it’s not anti-car — there will be an electric-vehicle and car show, along with workshops on organic lawn care and beekeeping.

The event will be held in the famously eco-friendly Takoma Park, and the day will open with a welcome from EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy.

Rosdieh on Thursday released a new set of policies for the county’s Department of Transportation regarding sustainability. In a statement, he said the department “recognizes that the County’s expanding transportation system has far-reaching impacts.

“The way our streets are planned, the range of available transportation options, and the way in which projects are constructed and maintained all influence our environment, physical health, economic well-being, social cohesion and the resiliency of neighborhoods over time.”
