WASHINGTON — The Lannisters and Starks made a triumphant return to TV and to the Twitterverse Sunday night.

The fourth season of the HBO hit “Game of Thrones” aired at 9 p.m. Sunday, but the tweets started up well before the show.

Fans waited all year for the return of the top rated drama and HBO got fans excited from the start.

In all, 6.6 million viewers tuned into “Game of Thrones” Sunday night on HBO, the most viewers the network has had since the Sopranos finale in 2007.

While the excitement was high during the show, the tweets really picked up after the episode was over when HBO Go wouldn’t load for many eager viewers.

HBO got the problem resolved by 1 a.m. There were likely many sleep deprived “Game of Thrones” viewers at work Monday.
