‘Me and Mrs. Jones’ singer Billy Paul has died

WASHINGTON — Billy Paul — who is probably best known for his hit “Me and Mrs. Jones” — has died. He was 80.

Paul died at his home in Blackwood, New Jersey, from complications due to pancreatic cancer, his co-manager Beverly Gay confirmed to WTOP.

The Grammy Award-winning soul singer with the distinctive, gravely voice, is among the artists linked with Philadelphia’s special “soul” sound crafted by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff.

“Me and Mrs. Jones” was a No. one hit for the last three weeks of 1972 and won Paul a Grammy for best rhythm ‘n blues male vocal performance. The song was by far his biggest hit, although he did have some success with “Let’s Clean Up the Ghetto,” ”Thanks for Saving My Life” and other releases.

Paul received birthday wishes from President Barack Obama on Jan. 19.
