One of the coldest days of the season

WASHINGTON – An arctic blast blew through the D.C. region on Saturday, bringing freezing temperatures and wind gusts of up to 50 mph in some places, and causing some roads to freeze.

Temperatures began to drop dramatically from the low-40s to the low-30s late Saturday afternoon and in some areas, wet weather turned to snow. Overnight temperatures dropped into the teens, or even lower with the wind chills.

ABC 7 Meteorologist Mike Stinneford says temperatures will struggle to get above freezing Sunday, making it one of the coldest days of the season.

The wind gusts eased up by early Sunday morning, but gusts of up to 40 mph can still be expected throughout the day.

Early Saturday afternoon, a heavy snow pushed through Hagerstown moving eastward. Snow was also reported on Saturday afternoon in Virginia in Warrenton and Culpepper. That turned to rain as temperatures climbed, but could become a light snow later into the evening.

Temperatures in the District on Saturday reached highs in the low-40s. They dropped quickly late afternoon to the low-30s, but the wind chill factor made it feel like single digit weather outside.

“It’s going to be a really cold, and a finally feel-like-winter weekend,” says ABC 7 meteorologist Ron Riley.

The chill is expected to continue into Sunday, with highs in the low-30s and clear skies.

By Monday, temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-40s.
