EMPORIA, Va. (AP) – Virginia alcohol regulators have arrested eight people and charged them with operating so-called nip joints in Emporia.

The arrests were made this week after officials executed search warrants for five addresses where alcohol was sold without a license. Besides nip joints, those operations are also called “shot houses.”

Agents also seized $5,800 in cash and what they described as a large amount of alcohol.

The accused range in age from 46 to 83. All have been released on charges of selling alcoholic beverages without a license, among other counts.
