In the cold, layer, layer, layer

WASHINGTON – With temperatures as cold as they are, keep common sense in mind as you head outside.

Remember, the body expends more than half of its energy while exposed to frigid outdoor air.

  • To prevent frostbite, keep ears covered, wear mittens instead of gloves, and wear warm, waterproof boots. Make sure the mittens and gloves fit well.
  • Layered clothing and clothes that are wind- and waterproof will keep your children warmer and dryer longer. Clothing, though, should let the kids move freely.
  • Cover the head, face and neck as much as possible. Without proper head gear, the body can be robbed of as much as half of its heat.
